You Can Make A Difference
Every company can have a positive impact on the environment by promoting telecommuting, encouraging double-sided copies, subsidizing mass transit and turning off the lights in meeting rooms when not in use.
Does your organization utilize a process through which you formally consider environmental impacts as part of developing strategies regarding products, vendors, technologies, facilities and personnel?
For instance, did you realize that inefficiencies in the selection and management of technology as well as its use can be minimized for the benefit of the environment and the company's bottom line? Going green can help the environment and when done correctly, it can reduce expense and even increase system availability.

Surf Environmental Sustainability Program
With environmental sustainability becoming less of a niche attitude and more of a social responsibility we now find ourselves striving to make the most efficient use of our technology while shunning less than earth-friendly behaviors. To reward this behavior Surf Technologies has developed a set of criteria to enable companies to benchmark their progress and then report that progress back to stakeholders, customers and the public in general.
The criteria we set for sustainable environmental stewardship is based upon reductions in the consumption of targeted resources for each of the first two years of the program. The reductions must be planned, quantifiable and may apply to the entire company or to select departments within the company. Subsequent years' certification is based upon being able to sustain the operation of the company with an increase in the consumption of the targeted resources not to exceed 50% of the company's annual growth rate.
At Surf, Green is not a color, it is a strategy.
"Do it right the first time and there is no cost associated with having to do it a second time. "
Case Study: Enterprise Success through Virtualization
By implementing server virtualization and shared storage a one billion dollar company was able to put more than 100 discrete applications on five physical servers. This resulted in a 30% reduction in the number of racks in the data center while reducing HVAC requirements by 16 tons and power consumption by 56kW.
